Early Life & Background

Marshawn Kneeland was born on July 8, 2001, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan. He was an excellent player on the school football team, generally playing the position of linebacker and tight end. In his senior year, he had a total of 110 tackles and eight sacks on defense, while on offense, he recorded 20 receptions for 330 yards and five touchdowns. He was also an area champion in track in the 400-meter run and an all-conference high jumper, showing his athleticism to be more than on the gridiron.

College Career at Western Michigan University

He went on to play college football at Western Michigan University from 2019 to 2023.

In 2019, he had limited snaps taken, but by 2020 and on, began making a little more of an impact.

He registered a career-high 57 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and eight quarterback hurries during his final season (2023). He earned Second Team All-MAC honors.

His performance at Western Michigan earned him recognition and made him a draft prospect.

Professional Career with the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys selected Marshawn Kneeland in the second round, No. 56 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He donned the jersey number 94, stood 6′3″ tall, and weighed about 268 lbs.

2024 season (rookie year): Played in 11 games with one start; compiled 14 tackles (8 solo, 5 assisted) according to the team's roster listing.

He suffered a knee injury during the season that required arthroscopic surgery but avoided a season-ending mark.

2025 season: His role was expanding; at the time of his death, he had logged a sack and contributed more in pass-rush situations.

He scored his first NFL touchdown a few days before his death by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football.

Personal Life and Character

Kneeland was known for his perseverance. He had lost his mother, Wendy Kneeland, in February 2024 — just when he was getting ready for the NFL draft. He wore a necklace that contained her ashes to remind him of her presence.

He lived in Plano, Texas, while he was with the Cowboys.

Off the field, he was described as a beloved teammate, someone who poured his heart into practice and games, always striving to improve. His agent said: “Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice and every moment on the field.”

Tragic Passing

On November 5, 2025, Marshawn Kneeland died at age 24. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Frisco Police Department, his death occurred after a late-night traffic stop and vehicle pursuit. He fled on foot after his car crashed, was located, and found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Additional dispatch audio revealed that his girlfriend had received a message from him stating he was saying "goodbye," and she informed authorities that he was armed and had expressed suicidal ideations. The official cause of death was later reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Surrounding facts:

DPS troopers attempted to stop his vehicle for a traffic stop around 10:33 p.m. CST; Kneeland refused to stop and the chase began. His car was found abandoned minutes later, crashed on the Dallas Parkway.

During the search, officers learned that he had expressed suicidal ideation. He was found around 1:31 a.m. on November 6 in the area with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization," the organization he played for, the Dallas Cowboys, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers … are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family."

Legacy and Reflection

Though Marshawn's pro career was brief, the journey and impact have meaning. From Michigan high school standout to college leader at Western Michigan to the NFL, reaching his dream of playing for the Dallas Cowboys, he faced adversity-injury, personal loss-and kept pushing. His first NFL touchdown shortly before his death was a testament to that fight.

His passing away at such a young age has raised conversations on mental health and the stresses that come with professional athletics. That he carried his mother's ashes, that he fought through adversity, that it would appear as though he finally reached a milestone in life, to then be lost so soon-it's tragic on many levels.

Marshawn will be remembered by his family, teammates, and coaches not for his stats but for his spirit. His former teammate Micah Parsons wrote on Twitter: “I hope you find peace.”
